WENTZVILLE AMERICAN LEGION POST 323
June – July 2014 Newsletter
Happy Summer! Hope this finds everyone well and enjoying an interesting summer, at least weather wise ! That’s OK, we will take “fall-like” temperatures any day! If you haven’t paid your dues for 2015, please do so as soon as you can! “we” The Legion, saves money when they don’t have to keep sending out notices.
MEETING HIGHLIGHTS for June – July, 2014:
Both June and July monthly membership meetings were well attended and our election of Executive Officers for the New Year 2015 were all accepted by acclamation with the exception of the 2nd Vice position. “Kal” will replace Bobby Slinkard, who fed us well? Depends who you ask..No really, thanks Bobby for all your hard work and years of service!! Our officers are as follows:
|1st Vice:||Bill Leeser|
|2nd Vice:||Emilo “Kal” Cavillo|
|Service Officer:||Charlie Skillman|
|Sgt. Of Arms:||Bob Phillips|
The Memorial Day Services held on Monday, May 26th was well attended and everyone enjoyed a beautiful service, GREAT music, an inspiring message and wonderful fellowship with the best snacks ever! A HUGE THANKS to everyone who helped to make this one of the best services in the county if not the whole state.! Gary Ruebling was the guest speaker and everyone was moved. We would love to have him speak again in the future. So if you missed his speech, try to catch him at another time. Every year, Jim Cunningham Music director for the Wentzville Holt High School band and students come and provide us with a wonderful selection of patriotic favorites and it’s nice to see who is in the room when their branches hymn is played by the band. Thanks so much guys for taking the time to service us in this way. We enjoy it very much
The 4th of July parade was also very well attended! It was a beautiful day and it was nice to see all the folks and children come out and enjoy it.! The only “downfall” and we, who are leading the parade & carrying those flags see it every year, literally every parade, is that people remain seated while the flag passes in front of them. This breaks our hearts to see the children remain seated. They don’t see the parents/adults stand up, remove their hats, place their hands over their hearts…..All of these rituals/traditions will not or can not be instilled in our children if we don’t teach them the proper respect. STAND UP FOR THAT FLAG!! Men and women have died and continue to die for that flag so that everyone-anyone can freely attend a parade, a game, a service, anything, everything just BECAUSE THAT FLAG FLIES FREE!! PLEASE SHOW RESPECT and please teach our young people how to pass down the traditions to their Children and grand children!
Dusty is now at Garden View, 700 Garden Path, room 210A, O’Fallon MO 63366 and would love visitors!! Sammy Anslem, Rick’s brother, fell and broke his hip so he is on the mend. Tom Cohagan has been declining in the last couple of months and has been in and out of hospitals. He is in rehab at Parklane in Wentzville but hopefully be going home soon to Foristell. Please keep all these folks in your thoughts and prayers. If you know someone who needs prayer or a card or even a visit, please let Doc know. Thank you.
The funeral service team members need to let Bill Leeser or Bob Phillips know if you plan to be out of town so that they can keep our honor services staffed.
Pat Simmons would like to draw everyone’s attention to the insert card in the National Magazine we have all received. We need to fill those out to update our branches of services, dates of service, etc. for our National records. Please fill out and mail yours today!
1st Vice report:
New dues notices are in the mail, lots of you have already paid! Bless your hearts for the rapid response! Great job!. If you haven’t paid 2015 yet, please do so as soon as you can. Thanks!
Randy Panke won $54.50 in June and $44.00 was won by Bob Braendle. The progressive pot was not won by any member (need to be present to win), so that sum will be over $100.00 for the August meeting.
We are still looking for help at bingo on Friday nights. We have a great group of players that come every week, and a loyal group of workers, but we could use more Legionnaires to help out. Without the bingo funds, we could not even pay for the upkeep of the Post home, much less make all the donations that we do every year. Please consider giving a few hours once a month to keep our best moneymaker going. Stop by on a Friday evening and see what you can do.
